Founder's Statement

For love of the written word and of the physical book I became a publisher, but that love began as a spark ignited in high-school, in my sophomore English class. I'll never forget my teacher's passion for precise and rich writing. She inspired our whole class and many others to strive for excellence. I'd grown up loving to read; and as a teenager, I was discovering the joy of writing, taking real pleasure in the sound of a perfectly phrased sentence. Whether I was writing fiction or non-fiction, essays or short stories, there was something powerful and important about what I was doing: finding my voice and learning how to make it stronger and clearer. I couldn't have done this alone. I was inspired and challenged by teachers who also felt that passion for writing. Looking back, I can trace a lot of the paths I've taken in life to those moments of self-discovery.

As a publisher, I've come to realize the opportunity I have to help today's students find their own voices. As much as writing was meaningful to me in high school, I missed out on the experience of becoming a published author at that young age. Having experienced the pride and satisfaction that comes with publication as an adult author, I've realized how much more it would have meant to me as a high school student to see my writing published in a real book and to see that book in the hands of people who mattered to me.

I created the Education Partnership Group, a division of Steward House, expressly for the purpose of making that experience a reality for students across the nation. I want teachers like my sophomore English teacher to have the opportunity to help students publish their best work at a low cost. I want students to know the real joy of being contributing authors in a professional anthology that could appear on their school's library shelf, in a local bookstore, or on Amazon or Barnes and Noble's sites. And my hope is that schools can leverage these anthologies to raise funds to help support school programs.

As you investigate the opportunity to partner with EPG, I hope you'll see this as an opportunity to inspire your students with the promise of something real--an anthology of work that showcases the best writing they have to offer. My editorial and publications staff are ready to work for you to make this a truly memorable and meaningful experience for everyone involved. Thank you for all you do and for the many students whose lives are touched by your work.
